I believe that John Earle effectively uses blogging and his company's strong
competitive advantage to stay ahead of his competitors.
Blogging: In most recent years,
the internet and related technologies are having a profound impact on marketing
communication. John Earle has created a blog for his company, Johnny Cupcakes.
This blog was created to help manage the company’s image, connect with
customers and generate interest and desire in the company’s products. John is
able to reach his customers on a personal and direct level. This is important
because it gives the consumer a feeling that their personal input matters to
the company that they buy products from. In turn, this creates a strong brand
loyalty between the consumer and the product.
John keeps his company’s blog independent and more authentic then a
normal corporate blog because he knows that gathering his customers’ opinions,
views and comments are important for his brands future. John likes to open the
door for direct conversation with customers which results in unfiltered
feedback for his brand. Most importantly, John’s unique personalized take on
his corporate blog is able to capture the reader and connect with them, making
them feel as though they already know John and his company on a
friendly/personal level. Because of this, customers are more inclined to buy
Johnny Cupcakes because they feel as though they are supporting a friend or
local ‘mom and pop’ type of business.
Competitive Advantage: John Earle
has made sure that his competitive advantage is one of the main ways he stays
ahead of his competitors. John has put many unique aspects into his business to
ensure that his customers don’t feel the need to stray away from his brand. One
way that John displays competitive advantage within his company is through a
tactic that identifies a reason for his customer to buy his products quickly.
John does this through “Exclusive/Limited Editions” within each tee shirt line.
John knows that consumers want what no one else has. If John promotes the fact
that a tee-shirt is only offered for a limited time, consumers are motivated to
buy that tee-shirt quickly, before they run out. The consumer knows that they
have purchased a tee-shirt that only a few other hundred people will be able to
own, giving the buyer a true feeling of personalized style. Another way that
Johnny Cupcakes stays ahead of his competitors is its ability to stay small and
true to the brand. Many other tee-shirt company’s sell their products to major
retail stores like Macy’s, Nordstrom’s etc. Many consumers see this as a “sell
out” of the company’s brand. Johnny Cupcakes realizes this effect on small company’s
and has made the decision to stay small and true to its unique personalize
nature. Because Johnny Cupcakes has stayed small, John is able to re-invest
into the company and is able to stand out by making the buying experience in
stores fun and exciting.
Johnny Cupcakes is so successful today because John knows how to market his
brand to consumers. John will make sure that Johnny Cupcakes will always stay
true to its brand, personalize as much as possible, take risks, improve
products, keep customers on their toes and always have a clear vision of what
the company stands for. John always wanted his brand to stay fun, personal and
interesting for the customers and by the looks of things, he’s been pretty
successful!
