I came across a few articles in the past couple of days that
draw attention to Facebook’s new tools associated with their “Collections”
feature. When taking a closer look at these new potential features, I can’t
help but see an eerily similar functionality as to what Pinterest offers its
users…but hey maybe that’s just me! I don’t blame Facebook for “looking up” to
the newest fad in social media, but major platforms like Facebook and Twitter
should take notice that Pinterest has the potential to be a social media GIANT.
Either way, Facebook’s new tools seem pretty neat.
The new buttons “want” and “collect” are part of Facebook’s
new “Collections” feature. These new buttons essentially allow a brand or
business to promote their products through a Facebook link on their own
homepages/websites. Users will also have the option to purchase these items
directly from participating retailers through Facebook’s platform.
The “Collections” feature also allows users to place
items/products to one of three types of “wish lists”; apparently there are
three pre-determined boards: General, Home and Fashion. “Collections” posts can
be discovered in news feeds and users will be able to share their collections
among other users as well. Does this sound like Pinterest to anyone??? Instead
of using the words “Pinning” and “Board” the idea is essentially exactly the
same but with a lot less personalization.
After doing some research I was able to find out that the
following companies are participating in this first round or “testing” stage:
Pottery Barn, Wayfair, Victoria’s Secret, Michael Kors,
Neiman Marcus, Smith Optics and Fab.com
My take away from all of this?? I've always thought that Pinterest
had the right idea in marketing and promoting items/products/services with a
visual strategy, when people see something they want they have a stronger urge
to engage/interact/purchase that item right away. I know that my “for the home”
purchases increased DRAMATICALLY since I've joined and engaged with the social
media platform. I actually blame Pinterest because my closet is overflowing
with clothes! When someone HEARS about a
product the first thing they do is ask their friends about it or conduct
additional research about the product online (reviews etc.) From a marketer’s
perspective, the new feature that Facebook is implementing offers businesses a
way to appeal to its customers who might not want to take the time to immerse
themselves into a whole new social media platform. I think that this feature is
absolutely something that all businesses should take part in. It’s a great way
for business pages to build up their fan base while their consumers use the
feature to collect, share and explore their products.
